Precise orthopaedics for the well-being of dogs

Welcome to orthoVET dog practice in Switzerland, where we specialize in orthopaedic care and functional diagnostics for dogs. At our dog practice orthoVET we have a clear goal: precise structural and functional diagnosis of orthopaedic disorders in dogs.
We utilise advanced diagnostic tools such as X-ray, CT and MRI to uncover the underlying causes of orthopaedic problems.

In addition, our functional movement diagnostics look at critical factors such as stance and swing phases, range of motion, extension/flexion, symmetries and gyroscopic signals to provide a comprehensive overview of a dog’s musculoskeletal health.

Our services go beyond diagnosis and also include proactive measures. We specialise in the growth stages of puppies (LupoMove® Puppy), the prevention of diseases such as HD/ED, OCD and panostitis, and the physical development of sporting and working dogs. Our expertise also includes the classification of hip and elbow dysplasia as well as advanced lameness diagnostics that differentiate between real and projected pain.

In addition, we have a unique capability: the diagnosis of exercise-induced lameness through functional measurements before and after training. This approach allows us to assess and compare functional characteristics before and after exercise, providing valuable insights into a dog’s physical well-being.

Our puppy consultation: LupoMove® Puppy

LupoMove® Puppy is a brand-protected prevention and prophylaxis programme that has been specially developed for the healthy development of puppies. You can also find our accompanying book, LupoMove® Puppy, in our web shop. It deals comprehensively with our innovative prevention programme, which aims to promote healthy growing up. In our puppy consultation you will also receive important information on exercise, nutrition and the health of your puppy’s skeletal system.

What can you expect in the puppy consultation?
dog orthopaedic diagnostics Switzerland
Kinematic examination

Professional structural, functional and kinematic examinations enable us to analyse your puppy’s movement patterns and identify any abnormal developments at an early stage.

Individual advice

We answer your most pressing questions on topics such as the optimum walking time, sitting posture and genetic behaviour patterns of your puppy.

Nutrition recommendation

Find out how to feed your puppy according to its needs and which nutrients are particularly important for healthy growth.

Examples of questions that we answer:
  • How long can my puppy walk without showing symptoms of overexertion?
  • Why does my puppy walk at an angle or tilt when sitting?
  • Is the pass gait genetically determined?
  • What is the optimum diet for my puppy’s growth?

The orthopaedic and kinematic examination of your puppy aims to promote even skeletal growth and reduce or prevent diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia, panostitis or OCD. All findings are recorded in a detailed veterinary report and sent to you by e-mail.

State-of-the-art equipment and technology

Our practice has the latest X-ray technology and high-resolution DR panels (wireless), which enable us to X-ray dogs without anaesthesia.

We are the only practice in Switzerland that can take dynamic hip x-rays in a standing position to capture the hip in motion. This technique is supported by innovative hardware and software for orthopaedic diagnostics.

  • Form diagnostics: X-ray and ultrasound
  • Functional diagnostics of movement: Support for orthopaedic and neurological examinations
  • Movement diagnostics: measurable, reproducible analysis of movement patterns

Dr. Patrick Blättler Monnier is working on research projects on movement and orthopaedic pathologies as well as on models for the sporting dog.

Radiological assessment of X-ray images and videos

Structural diagnostics such as X-rays, CT scans or MRIs only show bones, tendons and nerves, but not the functional causes of lameness or pain. If you ask yourself: ‘Why is my dog limping despite an unremarkable X-ray?’ or ‘What does an X-ray show in dogs?’, it is important to understand that these images alone are not sufficient. A comprehensive orthopaedic, neurological and functional examination as well as the identification of form-function-alterations (FFA) are essential for a correct diagnosis in connection with the clinical symptoms.

A kinematic movement analysis also provides an objective basis for assessment and supplements the interpretation of the image findings. This is particularly important if the structural diagnostics do not provide any clear pathological findings or several pathological changes are visible. Questions such as ‘Is an X-ray alone sufficient for diagnosis?’ or ‘Why is a movement analysis important?’ show that many owners are unaware of the need for a comprehensive examination.

Without this professional examination, x-rays or videos are often inadequate for judgment. Owner videos often do not take into account the ground conditions or the type of movement, which are crucial for assessing the dog’s lameness. Therefore, a serious and accurate assessment is not possible without these preliminary examinations. I therefore ask for your understanding that enquiries regarding the assessment of X-ray images, CT, MRI and videos cannot be answered without a prior professional examination.
